Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the season run?
The season begins at tryouts (month of March) and for most teams ends at the conclusion of the school year. Many older age group teams and select teams will compete in national level tournaments and college showcase events through the end of July.

When/where are tryouts?
Open tryouts for boys and girls (ages 10-17) are held in March. There are two tryout sessions for each age group; we encourage players to attend both sessions. Click here for more detailed information.

How many tournaments are there? Where are they located?
Most teams will enter six to eight tournaments. The majority of tournaments that our teams enter are within a two hour drive and are typically held on weekends. Also, some teams may choose to enter events that require an overnight stay. Teams that qualify for the AAU Nationals and enter other major tournaments will travel greater distances.

When/where are practices?
Most teams hold practices two times per week throughout the season (usually for 1 ½ hours each). Practices are held at the Brewster Sports Center, Hooperstown and local school gyms throughout the local area.

What does it cost to play in the Westchester Hawks program?
There is a $30 registration fee ($35 if registered at tryouts). If you are placed on a team, the fee is $625 per player for team ages 10-12, $695 for team ages 13-17. This fee includes covers the cost of tournament fees, insurance, gym rental and uniforms.

How do I determine which team I should tryout for?
A player’s age determines eligibility and restrictions for all participants. AAU is structured around age, not grade.  For girls, July 1st is the date determining age
(click here for 2008 AAU Girls Eligibility information). For boys, the date is September 1 (click here for 2008 AAU Boys Eligibility information and Age Division Calculator).
Players will be chosen based on talent, level of commitment and availability.  Each coach will make the final determination regarding the players on their team.

What are the select teams?
Within each age group, generally starting at U-11, the Hawks have one Select team. These teams are chosen at tryouts by the select coach, with the goal being to qualify and compete at the national level tournaments.
